Advice from You: “Real” Grown-ups

I think the biggest thing about having our one-year anniversary is that I’m now feeling less and less like a newlywed.

Of course, I’d say a big part of this is that we bought a “big” house that we are now working on and making our own.

We have settled into our own routines and habits. We have favorite weeknight dinners and a familiar list of grocery “staples” that we buy every week, or every week at least.

And we just feel like we’re growing up more all the time.

I have to admit I feel a little sad about some of this “growing up” stuff. I don’t want to lose the freshness and excited newness we had when we were first married. I’m even a little sad to leave our apartment as we move to our new house soon…it’s where we learned how to live together, where we became our own little family.

But I know the future will hold so much more than the past has held, and that there will always be new and exciting things for us to do together. And even though we won’t feel like newlyweds, we’ll feel like a comfortable, stable, married couple…which is just as good. Better even.

Still, sometimes I find myself feeling nostalgic and unsure what to do with those feelings.

What about you? Ever feel like you’re growing up too fast? Ever feel sad thinking about how some really great, exciting times are behind you? How do you handle those feelings? Let’s here some advice!

  1. You might need a new blog title soon! (Well, I guess you could just leave it the same…but being not a newlywed any more means you guys are growing together into something better!) Maybe it could be …. the … “truly-wed” wife. Ha ha. Just being silly. Congrats on your continually blossoming marriage! I will say that summer seems to be going by too quickly, but, like you, I know that there are more great things to come in the next seasons of our lives, so I’m looking forward to that, too.

Growing up should be a happy thing. You think it is going by fast now, wait till you have your own kids. My “baby” got married last year and just baught his first house! Boy do I feel old! But I also think back on all the wonderful family time we had and I would not trade it for any thing in the world. All I can say is that while I love the memories, I still look forward to the future and celebrating at least a 50 year wedding anniversary!

I feel the same way sometimes, my husband and I have been married almost 10 months now and it is amazing how fast you just sort of fall into a routine. And while it is a little strange to see the “newly”wed part of marriage being put in the past a bit, I just remind myself how many other “new” experiences we will have together such as when we finally purchase our first home together (sooner than later hopefully), starting a family together and all those other amazing firsts that we will get to share together!!

    • So true! I’m glad I’m not the only one who sometimes thinks it’s a little sad or strange to move on from these “firsts” we’re having right now. But there’s so much exciting stuff to come!

  4. I think that growing up is totally bittersweet! My husband and I have only been married about 4.5 months but been dating for 6.5 years total. I remember crying the night he turned 18 thinking the whole world would change, but it didn’t. I remember when he graduated hs, when I graduated hs, when he graduated college and got his first real job (boy is that scary!) and bought our own house and got married. Every new milestone we hit is kind of scary in itself, but I can’t get to where I want to go in life without them. They are all stepping stones. Those visions I have of us in the hospital cuddling our first child, the Christmas day when our kids are all gathered in our house with their significant others and their kids, they all can’t be reached unless I “grow up” and continue on this path in life. I just try to keep in mind that old phrase “Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.”

    • Very true! Bittersweet is still sweet, though, so I think we’re on the right track to stay positive! I’m glad you understand my struggles with this at times, though. And thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
