“T”aking Turns

I know it’s a concept that most of us learn when we’re young in regards to sharing toys and games and time on Mom’s lap, which is no fun for anyone.

But the idea of taking turns with household chores, and special attention to one another is one that’s been on my mind all weekend.

To make a long story, short, this weekend was busy.

busy, Busy, BUSY.

Friday night was supposed to be “date night in” with meatloaf and potatoes.

Instead, I found out at about 3:00 that we were headed to a fancy benefit dinner for a charity awards banquet. Wyatt got two free tickets courtesy of his job.

It was a super fancy dinner. I felt like a real grown up that night. A fancy grown up in the big, fancy, grown-up city. Did I mention it was fancy?

We had cocktails at the open bar, some pretty delicious dinner and a super delicious dessert, and sat back to watch the awards and speeches.

Getting all dressed up was certainly no how we planned to spend the night, but it was fun!

We spent the night with some friends from Hubs’ work and had a great time.

Saturday morning at 5:00am, I woke up feeling pretty sick (and no, it wasn’t from the open bar the night before…)

So at 9:00, we headed to the doctor and got a prescription. Suddenly the weekend went from super fun and busy to a little harder to manage.

So we changed gears a little bit and I spent more time on the couch trying to feel better while Hubs got things ready for the rest of the day.

There wasn’t time to really rest up, thought, because we had an indoor soccer game around noon, and tickets to the Royals game that night.

Yup, that's me, in a Royals shirt. Living in KC is certainly proving to be an interesting experience!

They lost, which is a bit of a bummer, but we had a good time and enjoyed the sunshine and ballpark hotdogs. We ended up leaving early because I was tired and ready for bed.

Sunday I woke up feeling much better than the previous 24 hours, but still not great. We got to sleep  a little later, but had to get on the road to Springfield to catch the minor league cardinals game we were planning to enjoy with my sister, brother-in-law, grandpa and cousins.

The trip was great, the game was fun, and the day was overall, a fun Sunday.

(I LOVE having my weekends off. I’m on the job hunt again after quitting Job#2, but I’m happy to be free to enjoy days off together.)

Sorry no pictures of the game, but we did get to see the Cardinals’ World Series trophy that was on display at the stadium for the weekend.

Sorry about the random people in the photo, I didn't want to wait in line to see it up close.

We made it home at a good time since it was an afternoon game, but there wasn’t time for a grocery trip run (it was supposed to be Friday night after the meatloaf…but that didn’t happen, clearly.) so we had pizza.

And we did some house-hunting. And just chilled out on the coach until bed.

This morning I woke up feeling better again, but still not 100 percent well, and I’m thankful Job#3 is only three days a week and that I finished most work for Job#1 on Friday.

That means I have all day today to rest, clean up our messy home after our weekend craziness, and keep recovering.

Throughout the weekend,  I was reminded of just how much taking turns has a place in marriage. It was Hubs’ turn to do more laundry, do more kitchen-clean up, and do more taking care of me.

He’s quick to hold my hand, help make me to feel better, no matter how much I dislike the medicine or whatever I need to do…and take out the trash.

And the best part about marriage is that I don’t have to feel guilty for soaking up his attention and care, because the next time he’s sick, it will be my turn to take care of him.

Sharing isn’t so bad after all.

What WE did for Valentine’s day…

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. Our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple.

There were no roses and no chocolates. No fancy dinner.

And that’s FINE.

Because Hubs and I never really celebrated Valentine’s Day that much when we were dating, and we figured there was no real reason to start now. Two years ago, I got him a vacuum for Valentine’s Day. We’re very nontraditional. And we’re trying to save money. And Hubs isn’t one for cheesy, silly gifts. I, on the other hand, like those stupid stuffed animals that sing and dance.

So instead of going out, we stayed in.

We decided we’d have a pajama party and have a “breakfast in bed” sort of theme. Wyatt made most of dinner because I worked late and had to drive home from Lenexa so I didn’t get home until almost 7.

Instead of dressing up, we changed into comfy clothes and enjoyed our night together.

First course: breakfast burritos.

Yum. Yum. Yum.

That was delicious, of course, but we didn’t stop there. We watched some TV, spent a little quality time together, and then…

Second course: chocolate chip pancakes and hot cocoa.

My favorite part of the dinner. Of course.

So much for trying to be extra healthy this week. However, we did really well with the burritos, (maybe not the bacon) and we’re all allowed to splurge on special occasions, right?

All in all, it was a great night. Except for the amount of Kleenex that we used.

Oh, no, I wasn’t crying.

(But thanks for asking. How nice of you!)

But I should also probably mention that Hubs is sick.

How romantic, huh?

So now I’m doctoring him all up.

And by that, I mean forcing him to take medicine and drink fluids. Cooking chicken noodle soup and letting him sleep and sleep and sleep. He’s even sleeping right now!

He didn’t go in to work today so he could stay home and sleep so I know he’s super miserable. I had to work today and went to the store after so I could restock all the “sick supplies.”

I even did the grocery shopping this week by myself which I don’t like to do because I hate having to push the cart, write down the prices on the list for our price matching spreadsheet, and figure out how to get around all the crazy people in the aisles blocking the entire space…

All in all, I loved our Valentine’s Day.

Yes, I’m sorry he’s sick. But I’m happy that he was able to stay home and get started getting better today. I’m also happy we stayed in last night.

The city restaurants would have been crazy anyway, andwe got to eat in our PJ’s. And it doens’t matter to me if we celebrate with chocolate and roses. It matters that we were together and we enjoyed our time. I’m so thankful for our marriage. He’s my sweetheart. For sure.

Our very casual, very perfect Valentine's Day!

You can’t get much better than that!

In fact, I think we’ll make it a tradition. Breakfast for dinner, early bed time, some romantic smelly-good-candle action at home in the comfort of our own bedroom, cozy blankets on the couch, cuddling…cough medicine.

Ok, so I won’t plan on repeating that last one…

Feeling Crummy

Before you stop reading, this isn’t one of those posts that revolve around me working through feelings of grumpiness and pouting.

I just don’t feel well.

Drat.

And my day started out so well!

I got up, made Hubs breakfast, and his lunch, then I got him out the door and I settled into my breakfast, household chores, catching up on emails and some other tasks. Then I went for a run. And it was glorious. The weather is AMAZING and the sun bright and cheerful.

I did close to 3 and a half miles today and would have done more but my ears were getting cold and I was starting to get tired and didn’t want to push it that much since I didn’t run all weekend or most of last week. (I did run Friday, but it was a short, fast run, a little less than 2 miles.)

But the minute I stopped running when I got back to our apartment complex, it hit me.

Blech.

I wasn’t sure I’d make it back upstairs, but I did, and luckily, I got through my shower and managed to get some lunch down.

But now I’m on the couch, sprawled out with a headache and a stomach that just doesn’t feel right. Oh and the sun seems to have joined me in my crumminess, as it’s now cloudy and gray.

I had high hopes and big plans for dinner tonight, too. Dang.

And for after dinner. I had a whole night of crafting and cocoa all lined up.

I don’t like to take naps during the day because it makes me less tired at night (which causes problems I talked about here) and I feel like I’m wasting time, but it’s time to close my eyes…just for minute…
